What a great season of anime we have! I mean, dang!
This season I am keeping up with the most anime I’ve ever done in a single season. There are so many good shows, and I’m sure I’ll find a few more after the season is actually over.
So, let’s talk about what I’ve been watching this season.
Sword Art Online: Alicization
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who knows me. I’m a little obsessed with the Sword Art Online series, despite its drawbacks.
Season 3 of SAO is the Alicization arc, which is going to be epic. I’ve read through all of the SAO light novels, so it’s really exciting to see the characters I’ve read about come to life in animation. This arc is longer than the entire series up until now, so you bet there is going to be lots of content.
The basis for this new season of SAO is Kirito awakening in a new, virtual world, which is indistinguishable from reality, after being attacked by the third perp of the Death Gun incident. Kirito must now figure out how to escape the Underworld, but discovers that the artificial beings inhabiting the world are more than just AI; they’re people.
What you can expect from this season is lots of story building. Characters, old and new, get extensive work. This season won’t only focus on Kirito, either, as the arc switches perspectives to tons of different characters. There will be laughs, epic fights, and sadness before this arc is all said and done.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
This series was a pleasant surprise for me, and I had not initially felt like following it. However, I soon discovered that this slice of life anime has character interactions that are pure gold. The main characters, Sakuta and Mai, have some of the best dialogue I have ever seen between a couple.
It’s funny. It’s heartfelt. I’m thoroughly entertained. Watch it.
This show centers around a phenomenon known as “Puberty Syndrome”, that affects various adolescents differently. Sakuta, a loner type with a bad rep, meets Mai during a time where Puberty Syndrome is affecting her. Mai finds that more and more people are not able to see her, so she walks around in a bunny suit to try and get reactions out of people.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
“You have to watch this show!”
That’s what my brother told me when he discovered it. My initial reaction was: oh great, another anime about being transported to another world. However, I decided to give the first episode a watch. It intrigued me, so I watched another…and now I’m hooked.
This may just be another show about being transported to a fantasy world with an OP main character, but by god I am thoroughly entertained. Watching this little slime slowly discover the world and others, helping out monsters, and kicking ass wherever he may go is awesome. I’m all in, man.
The title pretty much sums up this show. A 37 year old Satoru has his life suddenly ended when he saves his junior and his girlfriend from a person with a knife. After his life ends, he finds that he has been reincarnated into a strange, new world….as a slime.
Goblin Slayer
Oh boy…
Yeah this one.
If you have been keeping up with anime, you probably felt the reaction of the community after the first episode of this one aired. It left people with mixed feelings; some welcoming the dark change on the fantasy world, while others were put off.
As for me, I’m down. It’s nice to have the change on the fantasy world. I enjoyed Grimgar, and am still reading the light novels, for its take on the more realistic side of fantasy. Maybe that’s why I like Goblin Slayer. It’s not afraid to show the bloody, gory details of battle in a fantasy-type world.
Goblin Slayer is the name of an adventurer whose only goal is to hunt goblins. Many have heard of him, many judge him for only hunting lowly creatures. After he saves a priestess from certain death, she joins his party. Who knows where their adventures will take them…
Okay, not my best description, but bear with me.
Zombieland Saga
I have never, ever watched an idol show. Never. Ever.
…but now I’m watching an idol show.
This show has got to be the biggest troll I’ve ever seen, and it’s fantastic. I’m captivated. Even when the show goes full on idol, I’m fine with it, because I know another humorous moment is just around the corner. Also…how can you not be a fan of a show that has an epic rap battle in the second episode?!
Zombieland Saga focuses on a group of idols that have been mysteriously revived as zombies to become an idol group. Their manager is obnoxious, clueless, and mysterious. Somehow, this group of zombies will have to keep their identities a secret, and become popular.
